My Dog Poops in My House? Why?

Penned By: Dr Asmat Ullah Khan

When the dog starts pooping inside all of a sudden, it might be an indication of a health problem or a change of routine and diet/environment. The first step is taking the dog to the vet to rule out medical causes.

Intestinal Parasites

Worms, among other parasites, are some of the few causes of gastrointestinal inflammation that often attacks a dog’s intestines, thus causing urgent bowel movements and accidents inside the house. Infections with these parasites can be acquired from just about anywhere, and the infected dog will start showing symptoms, which include diarrhea, stool with blood, or mucus.

Food allergies

Food allergies or intolerances are rare but can lead to gastrointestinal upset in a dog. Some common allergens are beef, dairy, chicken, wheat, and lamb. Signs of a problem might include frequent soft stools and increased gas.

Separation Anxiety

Dogs can have separation anxiety for many reasons besides abandonment. Some of these include changes in routine, such as staying alone for too long. Signs of separation anxiety in dogs include destructive chewing, pacing, whining, and indoor soiling.

Noise Phobia

Stressors of the outdoor environment—such as noise, predators, or moving vehicles—may make a dog feel uneasy, thereby failing to defecate outside or causing them to have accidents indoors instead.

Getting Disturbed

Some dogs may be otherwise so distracted by their environment that they don’t travel outside to complete their bathroom routine and have indoor accidents when they return.

Changes in Routine

Schedule changes in a dog’s life can disrupt bathroom routines. The latter is particularly so with the newly house-trained, with even the slightest stressor or change in routine leading to setbacks.

Aging Issues

Additionally, older dogs may experience cognitive decline or arthritis, leading to housebreaking lapses and defecation problems. Other signs may include increased anxiety, pacing, and house soiling.

Diet Change

Sudden diet changes in dogs can easily create turmoil in their gastrointestinal system. New foods, treats, or even scavenging out of the garbage can all be changes that disrupt the bacterial balance in the guts, leading to loose stools and accidents.

How to stop a dog from crapping in the house

Try these approaches instead. If there are no signs of improvements, see a veterinarian:

Tackle the Underlying Health Conditions: Schedule a visit to the veterinarian to diagnose and treat any medical problems. Bring feces samples to check for intestinal parasites, which can be treated with deworming medications. For dogs prone to parasites, consider preventive monthly treatments.

Food Allergies Management If a food allergy is suspected, a veterinarian can prescribe a special diet, like a hydrolyzed diet or novel protein diet, for the elimination of the symptoms.

A daily probiotic Proviable can also contribute to a balanced intestinal microbiome.
